James 4:6–10
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Step 2 of 5 · Declare
I Will Return With Humility
Read this slowly. Let each sentence remain anchored to today’s Scripture.
God gives grace to the humble. I will stop defending what needs to change, draw near to him honestly, and take a real step of repentance.
Step 3 of 5 · Meditate
Draw Near With Humility
James connects grace with humility, repentance, and a return to God. Drawing near is not sentimental closeness alone; it includes honest change.

James 4 speaks directly about conflict, disordered desire, pride, and divided loyalty. In that setting comes a hopeful line: God “gives more grace.”
Grace does not make the rest of the passage unnecessary. James responds with a series of actions: submit to God, resist evil, draw near, cleanse, purify, grieve what is wrong, and humble yourself.
This is repentance language. Drawing near to God is not only seeking a comforting feeling. It includes becoming honest about what has been pulling us away and turning in a different direction.
At the same time, repentance is not self-hatred. James begins the section with grace. Humility tells the truth without pretending we can repair ourselves by shame.
Ask where you have become divided—saying you want one thing while repeatedly choosing another. Bring that contradiction into the light. Name it clearly before God and choose one concrete act of turning.
Grace makes honest return possible.
Step 4 of 5 · Pray
Pray in response
God, thank you that you give grace. Show me where pride or divided desire has kept me from honest repentance. I do not want to defend what needs to change. Help me draw near with humility, receive mercy, and take one concrete step in a different direction. Amen.
