“Iron sharpens iron” is a short proverb, but the surrounding chapter says much about friendship: faithful wounds, earnest counsel, nearby neighbors, and the testing effect of praise.
Healthy relationships do more than make us feel affirmed. Trusted people can help us notice blind spots, examine motives, refine ideas, and become wiser. That kind of sharpening is not the same as harsh criticism.
Not everyone deserves equal access to your life. Wise sharpening grows in relationships marked by honesty, love, humility, and mutual accountability. A person who humiliates, controls, or constantly tears you down is not practicing biblical friendship simply because the words feel “challenging.”
We also have to become the kind of friend who can sharpen without injuring. Truth should be offered for another person’s good, not to display superiority.
Think about the people around you. Who helps you become more truthful, wise, and faithful? And when they speak honestly, do you listen—or only stay close to people who agree with you?
Step 4 of 5 · Pray
Pray in response
God, thank you for people who help me grow. Give me discernment to recognize trustworthy counsel, humility to receive correction, and love when I speak honestly to others. Keep my words from becoming proud or cutting. Form relationships that make us wiser and more faithful. Amen.
Step 5 of 5 · Reflect
Reflect with honesty
Who can speak honestly to you without needing to flatter you?
How do you normally respond when trusted counsel is uncomfortable?
How can you offer truth to someone else without becoming harsh?
