Step 1 of 5 · Receive

Receive this day’s Word

Psalm 95:1–7

Oh come, let’s sing to the LORD. Let’s shout aloud to the rock of our salvation! Let’s come before his presence with thanksgiving. Let’s extol him with songs! For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth. The heights of the mountains are also his. The sea is his, and he made it. His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let’s worship and bow down. Let’s kneel before the LORD, our Maker, for he is our God. We are the people of his pasture, and the sheep in his care. Today, oh that you would hear his voice!

Step 2 of 5 · Declare

I Will Begin With Worship and Listening

Read this slowly. Let each sentence remain anchored to today’s Scripture.

God is my Maker and Shepherd. I will begin with gratitude, bow my heart before him, and remain willing to hear his voice through Scripture.

Step 3 of 5 · Meditate

Worship Before You Rush

Psalm 95 moves from joyful praise to humble worship and attentive listening. Worship reminds us who God is before the rest of the day competes for our attention.

Psalm 95 begins with movement and sound: come, sing, shout, give thanks. Then the posture changes. The worshipers bow and kneel before the LORD, their Maker and Shepherd.

The psalm gives reasons for praise. God is Creator; the depths, mountains, sea, and dry land are his. He is also described relationally: “we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep in his care.” Worship joins awe with belonging.

Then comes an important turn: “Today, oh that you would hear his voice!” Praise is not only expression toward God. It prepares a people to listen.

Before rushing into requests, schedules, or worries, spend a moment naming who God is. Thanksgiving can interrupt the illusion that everything depends on you.

You do not need a particular mood to worship. Begin with something true about God and something you have received with gratitude. Then become quiet enough to listen to Scripture rather than only bringing God a list of words.

Step 4 of 5 · Pray

Pray in response

LORD, you made what I cannot control and you care for your people. I come with gratitude today. Quiet the noise in me that only wants to speak. Help me worship you for who you are and listen carefully to what your Word is saying. Amen.

Step 5 of 5 · Reflect

Reflect with honesty

  1. What does Psalm 95 name as reasons for worship?

  2. What are you grateful for today?

  3. What happens in you when praise is followed by quiet listening?
