Step 1 of 5 · Receive

Receive this day’s Word

Luke 6:27–31

“But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also. Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again.

“As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them.

Step 2 of 5 · Declare

I Will Not Let Hostility Shape My Character

Read this slowly. Let each sentence remain anchored to today’s Scripture.

I will not answer hatred by becoming hateful. Where it is wise and safe, I will pray, do good, and refuse revenge while maintaining truthful and necessary boundaries.

Step 3 of 5 · Meditate

Love That Refuses to Become the Enemy

Jesus calls his followers to a costly love that refuses retaliation and prays even for enemies. This does not require remaining in danger or enabling abuse.

Read the full devotional

Luke 6 places Jesus’ command to love enemies beside blessings, woes, mercy, and teaching about how disciples treat others. His words confront the instinct to answer hostility with the same spirit.

Enemy-love is not sentimental approval of wrongdoing. Jesus names hatred, curses, and mistreatment as real. The radical response is to refuse revenge as the controlling pattern.

These verses must also be handled carefully. They should never be used to keep someone in an abusive or dangerous situation. Seeking safety, legal protection, accountability, or distance can be necessary and wise. Love does not require giving another person unlimited access to harm you.

For many of us, today’s application will be smaller: refusing to rehearse an insulting response, praying for someone we resent, doing good without manipulating, or choosing not to spread a person’s failure.

Ask God to free you from becoming shaped by the hostility you have received.

Step 4 of 5 · Pray

Pray in response

Jesus, you know the people and situations that stir anger in me. Keep me from becoming shaped by revenge. Give me wisdom to pursue safety and accountability where needed, and grace to refuse needless cruelty, gossip, or retaliation. Teach me to pray honestly even when love feels costly. Amen.

Step 5 of 5 · Reflect

Reflect with honesty

  1. Where are you tempted to answer harm with harm?

  2. What response would be loving without denying truth or safety?

  3. Do you need prayer, distance, accountability, or outside support before taking another step?
