Step 1 of 5 · Receive

Receive this day’s Word

Hebrews 4:14–16

Having then a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold tightly to our confession.

For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.

Let’s therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need.

Step 2 of 5 · Declare

I Draw Near for Mercy and Grace

Read this slowly. Let each sentence remain anchored to today’s Scripture.

Because of Jesus, I can approach God honestly and confidently. I will seek mercy for failure and grace for the help I need, without hiding or pretending.

Step 3 of 5 · Meditate

Come Boldly for Mercy and Grace

Because Jesus is a compassionate high priest, believers may approach God’s throne with confidence to receive mercy and timely grace.

Shame tells us to stay away until we have improved ourselves. Hebrews tells us to draw near.

The reason for confidence is not that we have no weakness. It is that Jesus, our great high priest, understands human testing and has opened access to God.

The passage says that Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses. This does not mean he approves every choice. It means we do not come before someone cold, detached, or unfamiliar with suffering.

We approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace for help in time of need. Mercy addresses guilt and failure. Grace supplies help we do not have within ourselves.

Confidence in prayer is therefore not arrogance. It is trust in Christ’s welcome. We can bring temptation, confusion, regret, weakness, and need without cleaning the story first.

Drawing near may include confession. It may include asking for strength before a difficult choice, wisdom for a decision, or help to resist a pattern.

Some struggles also require accountability, professional support, protection, or practical change. Prayer does not replace those steps. Grace can empower us to take them.

What have you been keeping at a distance because you feel ashamed or unworthy? Bring it honestly to God. Ask for mercy where you have sinned and grace for the help you need now.

You do not earn an invitation to the throne of grace. Jesus is the invitation.

Step 4 of 5 · Pray

Pray in response

Jesus, thank you that you have opened the way for me to come near.

I bring you the weakness, temptation, regret, or need I have been hiding.

Give me mercy where I have sinned and grace for the help I need now. Show me what I must confess, change, or bring into trusted support.

Keep me from pretending and from despair.

Let your compassion give me courage to walk in truth.

Amen.

Step 5 of 5 · Reflect

Reflect with honesty

  1. What weakness, failure, or need have you kept at a distance because of shame?

  2. Do you need mercy, strength, wisdom, accountability, or practical support?

  3. What honest step can you take after bringing this need before God?
