Step 2 of 5 · Declare

I Ask God for Wisdom

Read this slowly. Let each sentence remain anchored to today’s Scripture.

I do not need to pretend that I know everything. I ask God for wisdom with humility, and I will listen through Scripture, prayer, careful thought, and trustworthy counsel before I act.

Step 3 of 5 · Meditate

Ask God for Wisdom

James invites believers who lack wisdom to ask God, who gives generously. Wisdom begins with humble dependence rather than confident guessing.

There are times when we have information but still do not know what to do. We may understand the options and yet remain unsure which response is faithful. James speaks directly to this need: when wisdom is lacking, ask God.

In the surrounding passage, believers are facing trials. The wisdom they need is not merely cleverness or quick problem-solving. It is the ability to live faithfully when circumstances are difficult and character is being tested.

Asking God for wisdom is an act of humility. It admits that our first reaction may not be our wisest one. It also recognizes that God is generous. We do not have to approach him as though he resents sincere dependence.

God’s wisdom often comes through means he has already given: Scripture, prayer, careful thought, trustworthy counsel, patience, and attention to the consequences of our choices. Asking does not remove the need to listen, learn, or take responsibility. It places those practices under God’s direction.

You may not receive a complete map or an immediate feeling of certainty. Wisdom sometimes looks like the next clear act of obedience, the restraint to wait, the courage to apologize, or the willingness to ask better questions.

Bring one decision before God today. State the issue plainly. Ask for wisdom rather than simply asking him to confirm what you already prefer. Then remain open to correction and take seriously what Scripture and sound counsel reveal.

God’s generosity gives us freedom to ask. Humility gives us readiness to receive.

Step 4 of 5 · Pray

Pray in response

Generous God, I need your wisdom.

You know the decision, pressure, or uncertainty before me. Keep me from pride, haste, and the desire to hear only what confirms my preference.

Teach me through your Word. Help me think carefully, receive wise counsel, and notice where fear or selfishness may be shaping my judgment.

Give me patience where I should wait and courage where obedience is already clear.

May the choice I make reflect truth, love, humility, and faithfulness.

Amen.

Step 5 of 5 · Reflect

Reflect with honesty

  1. What decision or situation requires more than your first reaction?

  2. What outcome are you tempted to demand, and how might that preference affect your judgment?

  3. What source of wisdom—Scripture, prayer, careful thought, or trustworthy counsel—should you engage before taking the next step?
